88. Part 7 of Reaction to “Attack on Titan” S4E10: “A Sound Argument”

"A Dash of Salt with AJ" podcast logo alongside color artwork from the anime staff: A still-crippled Eren Jaeger rests on a chair, waiting patiently as he did in Liberio. He's still dressed in his disguise as an Eldian Marleyan veteran. His body language is relaxed, but his eyes have an eerie bright-green glow, his expression empty. Behind him menacingly looms the face of the Attack Titan, a similar glow in its eyes. Japanese inscriptions adorn the sides of the image.

Desperation can be lost in translation. Was what we witnessed less a matter of simple lashing out in anger…and more an image of a desperate young man searching for hope and making a final plea for alternative suggestions before the fates of so many people are finally sealed?

I’m about to quote Lucy Liu again.…

I liked how they chronologically rearranged some scenes, it makes it better and more understandable, so with this pace, eren and Hanji scene, introduction of kyomi and historia’s pregnancy will be for ep 69(number 69 refers to health, family and idealism)

Note: This comment was actually posted before the episode itself was even released; folks were already looking ahead to S4E10 in the thread for S4E9.

A lot of your insights on the Attack Titan are interesting. The titan itself plays a strong role in the series and while it’s a bit different from how you described it, it’s still mind-boggling all the same. Also the focus on Eren’s physique made me realize that while he does look incredible… it’s not just for looks. He does gain the ability to do successive Titan transformations and I guess I never realized that was closely connected with his physical fitness. They even make a point in the manga to show him and the 104th doing physical labor during the time-skip to Season 4.

I wanted to post a couple of versions of the video here because of the variance in translation. The first one is the shorter version, while the second one includes Hange’s comments about her predecessor’s choice to appoint her as his successor. [Don’t forget—you may have to manually turn on YouTube CC.]

Now, if any of you sons of guns got ANYTHING else to say, NOW’S THE FREAKING TIME!

—Lucy Liu, “Kill Bill

Caution—graphic violence and language. And as a side note, the context and feelings behind the words were different, but I think you can see why I referenced this quote with regards to Eren and what I see as his demand that if anyone actually has a real plan here, they need to hurry the freak up and speak.

Also, come to think of it, the actual context of the Kill Bill exchange reminds me a bit of that scene with poor Reiner and his jerk father who pulled the “Eldian Devils” card…as though he wasn’t the one who’d chosen to sleep with Reiner’s mother and thus sire this half-Eldian youngster in the first place.

This clip has lower resolution, but shows the beginning of the conversation, plus is more fully subtitled.

[5, 6, 8, & 9 are the relevant parts of the “Brave Volunteers” reaction which I reference in Part 3 of my reaction to “A Sound Argument.” They contain discussions regarding the Liberio strike, the character development showcased in the flashbacks, and also Eren’s mirror chats. Plus, note is made of the fact that Mikasa is also shown talking to herself.

Part 8 of “The War Hammer Titan” reaction-interview is the one where WolfManiac_ specifically brings up that issue of why Eren is likely acting independently here, so that’s the one I’m singling out. But the surrounding episodes are also worth checking out if you’re interested in general discussion of the Liberio operation as a whole, including that question of possible war crimes.]

This is one of those episodes where the comment section will be open on YouTube, so feel free to sound off there! HOWEVER…if you’re a manga reader, PLEASE make sure to properly mark off and hide from view any Season 4 spoilers you wish to share (that is, use a spoiler warning and make sure the spoiler material itself is below the “read more” tag). I do plan on moderating comments to try and help people avoid getting accidentally spoiled regarding Season 4.

And if you’re a troll who wants to deliberately do that for “fun”? …I’ll respond accordingly.

All right, folks. Shinzou wo sasageyo!!

Content Notice: Regarding content, most of my coverage of Attack on Titan will be in the PG range, unless otherwise noted. PG-13 will be when we get into things like particularly graphic descriptions of violence and suicide.

The show itself is definitely an R/TV-MA series, however, and I would recommend a minimum age of 15 or so. That is chiefly due to violence, mainly of the action type. That aspect gets very intense. There’s some strong language here and there, but not to where it’s really noteworthy, and as far as I can recall, there’s been no graphic nudity or sexual content thus far, though there are certain other content caveats mentioned in my review.
