Anime often gets a bad rap. And to be real, it isn’t always undeserved, PLUS the fans often do not help matters. I can say that even as someone who loves various anime.

But even if you don’t normally watch anime or read manga, I’m gonna ask you to put that on hold for just a little bit. The series I want to introduce you to here—Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan—is not only one of the best anime series I’ve seen, but also one of the best shows I’ve seen, period.

The story and characters are brilliantly written; the emotional aspects are raw, relatable, and grounded; and the soundtrack is utterly exquisite.

And with the final season just around the corner—and I intend to have ongoing coverage of that, by the way—I really wanted to start talking about this series on my podcast.

Most of my content related to this series will be intended for folks who are caught up with the television show but have not read the manga which is further ahead in the storyline. But I wanted to have a least one episode that was geared towards folks who haven’t watched the show yet and will need to avoid storyline spoilers.

If You’re Feeling Iffy About Anime:

This is a whole subject by itself, but for those of you who don’t watch anime or have a negative impression of it: anime is really a format or medium rather than a genre. To label the entire thing as either childish or trashy would be like labeling the entirety of television or feature films that way. The type of content you can get within those formats and even the actual genres varies wildly. Some material is terrible, while other material is mediocre, and other material is absolutely magnificent. And the appropriate age range also varies plenty. As an example: Toy Story and John Wick are both movies, but are wildly different.

When it comes to anime, the fact that it uses animation is not indicative of its age appropriateness. There are indeed shows out there that are good for younger viewers, but other shows demand a teenage or adult audience. And then some stuff just doesn’t need to be watched by any human being. …Sounds like some Hollywood stuff, eh?

Content Notice: This episode is in the PG range, as I will be referencing some topics that are not child-friendly, but nothing graphic. The show itself is definitely an R/TV-MA series, however, and I would recommend a minimum age of 15 or so. That is chiefly due to violence, mainly of the action type. That aspect gets very intense. There’s some strong language here and there, but not to where it’s really noteworthy, and as far as I can recall, there’s been no graphic nudity or sexual content thus far, though there are certain content caveats I’ll mention in the podcast.
