17. Part 3 of Thoughts on the “Attack on Titan” Season 4 Trailer

“Eren…come home.” Mikasa’s plea from the teaser trailer is brief, yet it could hold a world of meaning.

Some questions in this episode:

  • What might Mikasa Ackermann’s words to Eren Jaeger mean?
  • What are Eren’s plans now that he knows at least some of the truth about the world beyond the Walls? Will he become a new “Patriot,” or might he become an enemy of Paradis?
  • If Eren joins up with the Patriots and becomes Rebel Scum (mandatory Star Wars reference, haha!), how could he best aid them from a strategic standpoint?

In this series of episodes about the trailer, I’ll continue chilling out and sharing some theories, observations, questions, and general thoughts I have as an “anime-mostly” fan as we examine the Season 4 trailer and consider the 3 seasons of storyline that led up to this moment. I’d already written and recorded these episodes prior to the premiere but hadn’t had enough time to get them out as soon as I would’ve liked. And I’m sure it won’t be too long before we get answers on certain things, so I’d like to get these questions and thoughts out there ahead of time.

This is one of those episodes where the comment section will be open on YouTube, so feel free to sound off there! HOWEVER…if you’re a manga reader, PLEASE make sure to properly mark off and hide from view any spoilers you wish to share (that is, use a spoiler warning and make sure the spoiler material itself is below the “read more” tag). I do plan on moderating comments to try and help people avoid getting accidentally spoiled.

And if you’re a troll who wants to deliberately do that for “fun”? …I’ll respond accordingly.

All right, folks. Shinzou wo sasageyo!!

As I was fetching the teaser trailer for this web page, I noticed some wonderfully insightful comments beneath it, and I wanted to share these with you, dear viewers.

Can you guys understand what they really feels? They fought so hard, thousands died, they risked everything because they thought that they’re so close to freedom. But at the end of the day, they found out the worlds hate the so much and considered them as a children of evil. Freedom? not even close….
This scene has perfectly deep message

This ending was simply amazing. What was one of the most dramatic and epic seasons of an anime ever ends with a soft tune displaying the beauty of the now explorable world that lies before our heroes. It left a lingering feeling that one cannot really explain. The only thing that’s comforting me at this point is the fact that this story isn’t over, and that there’s a fair bit more to come.

I love this damn scene for one particular reason that completely went over my head the first couple times. Armin and Eren have wanted to reach the sea since Season 1. Armin wanted to reach the sea because it was proof of a more broad world full of wonder. Eren wanted to reach the sea because it represented his freedom. But Armin thought this whole time that Eren wanted the same thing he did. But when they finally reach the ocean, Armin tries to show Eren a seashell, something amazing and wonderful that Armin has dreamt of seeing for years. But Eren doesn’t care. Freedom isn’t in that shell. Freedom isn’t in that ocean. Freedom is far away. And somehow, the sea doesn’t matter so much anymore to Eren. That’s why Armin looks so down when Eren doesn’t react to him at the end, and instead goes off on his soliloquy. Armin realizes Eren never cared about the sea, or at least not anymore. And the childhood friend he knew, or at least thought he knew, isn’t entirely there anymore.

That look on Erens face says so much along with that last question. I’m not a manga reader but his face clearly shows a man who’s tired and damaged and can’t stand his situation anymore yet his eyes still glow with an idealistic optimism just like the beginning, like the future he’s been dreaming of is just over the horizon. That’s all you need to see to know that Eren is desperate and will slaughter the Marlians without a second thought

Content Notice: This episode is in the PG range, as I will be referencing some topics that are not child-friendly, but nothing graphic. The show itself is definitely an R/TV-MA series, however, and I would recommend a minimum age of 15 or so. That is chiefly due to violence, mainly of the action type. That aspect gets very intense. There’s some strong language here and there, but not to where it’s really noteworthy, and as far as I can recall, there’s been no graphic nudity or sexual content thus far, though there are certain content caveats mentioned in my review.
